In the midst of a political storm over comedian Kunal Kamra’s controversial comments about Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Mumbai police have registered two FIRs. One FIR is against Kamra for his remarks, while the other is against Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) workers who vandalized the studio where the act was performed.
The Mumbai police confirmed that two cases have been filed at Khar police station. The investigation is still ongoing.
What Did Kunal Kamra Say?
During a performance at Habitat Studio in Mumbai’s Khar area, Kamra made a jibe at Eknath Shinde, calling him a “traitor.” He used a modified version of a popular Hindi song from the movie Dil To Pagal Hai to mock Shinde’s 2022 rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray.
This act quickly sparked outrage among Shinde’s supporters. Shortly after, workers from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) stormed the studio, ransacking it and issuing threats against Kamra. They also filed an FIR against the comedian.
Studio Shuts Down Amid Vandalism
In response to the vandalism, the Habitat studio, where Kamra’s performance took place, announced it would be closing its doors. The studio expressed shock and sadness over the incident, emphasizing that artists are solely responsible for their own views and creative choices.
“We have never been involved in the content performed by any artist, but recent events have made us reconsider how we handle such situations,” the studio stated. “We are shutting down until we find a way to offer a platform for free expression without risking our safety and property.”
The studio’s closure comes as they call for open discussions with artists, audiences, and stakeholders about ensuring free expression without jeopardizing anyone’s well-being.
Police Action and Arrests
In connection with the vandalism, Mumbai police have arrested 11 Shiv Sena workers. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered against Kamra under various Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) actions, including 353(1)(b) (statements conducing to public mischief) and 356(2) (defamation), said an official from MIDC police station.
As the situation develops, both the comedian and the political party’s workers face legal consequences.
