The first edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic will take place at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on May 24. This event is set to feature some of the world’s top javelin throwers. Notable athletes confirmed for the competition include two-time world champion Anderson Peters, American Curtis Thompson, season leader (87.76m), Germany’s 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Rohler, and Kenya’s Rio Olympic silver medallist and 2015 world champion Julius Yego.
The biggest name in the event, however, will be Neeraj Chopra, the reigning world champion and two-time Olympic medallist. Neeraj confirmed his participation with excitement, stating, “Yes, count me in as well,” when announcing the names of fellow athletes.
Arshad Nadeem’s Participation Still Pending
The event’s organizers have also invited Arshad Nadeem, the Paris Olympics Champion from Pakistan, but his participation has not been confirmed yet. Neeraj shared during a press conference from his training base in Potchefstroom, South Africa, that he has spoken with Arshad, who is still discussing the details with his coach. Neeraj promised to update everyone as soon as Arshad confirms his participation.
Indian Athletes to Compete Alongside Global Stars
The competition will also feature top Indian athletes. Four to five leading throwers from the ongoing National Senior Federation Cup in Kochi will get the chance to compete with the international stars. This will be a great opportunity for Indian athletes to showcase their talent on a global stage.
Shift in Venue from Panchkula to Bengaluru
Originally planned for Panchkula, Haryana, the event had to be moved to Bengaluru due to technical issues at the venue. Neeraj explained that the change was recommended by World Athletics (WA), due to lighting issues that would affect broadcasting. Although Neeraj had hoped to hold the event in his hometown, he expressed excitement about the Bengaluru venue, saying, “It’s a very good venue to start this international competition, and I have great memories of Bengaluru.”
A Dream Come True for Neeraj Chopra
This athletics event is a milestone for Indian sports, marking the first major event of its kind in the country with Neeraj Chopra’s name attached. Neeraj aims to bring world-class athletics to India and promote the sport. He said, “It’s a dream come true for me. I am doing my bit to bring a world-class track and field event to India.” The event is expected to have a lasting impact on the growth of athletics in the country.
Neeraj Chopra’s Vision for the Future of Athletics in India
Neeraj Chopra hopes that this event will inspire the next generation of athletes in India. He shared his vision for the future, saying, “I want athletics to grow in this country. I want parents to bring their children to see the world’s top athletes and understand what it takes to reach the top.” Neeraj believes such experiences are essential for the growth of athletics in India.
Tickets and Future Plans for the Event
While tickets will be available for the event, Neeraj mentioned that the number would be limited to ensure an enjoyable experience for attendees. He also shared that the Neeraj Chopra Classic would become an annual event, with plans to introduce more disciplines, including women’s javelin throw, in the coming years.
This event is just the beginning of a new era for athletics in India, and Neeraj Chopra is excited to lead the way.
