Nepal Telecom has launched its new service, ‘VoWiFi’ (Voice over Wi-Fi), officially during its 21st anniversary celebration on Tuesday. This service allows users to make voice calls and send SMS messages over a Wi-Fi network using their Nepal Telecom mobile number, even in areas with weak or no mobile signal.

What is VoWiFi?

VoWiFi, also known as Wi-Fi Calling, is an advanced telecom technology that enables mobile phone users to make calls and send messages over a wireless internet connection (Wi-Fi) rather than relying on traditional mobile networks. It’s especially useful in areas with poor mobile signal coverage but reliable Wi-Fi access.

The VoWiFi system works by converting voice signals into data packets using Internet Protocol (IP), which are then transmitted over the Wi-Fi network. This ensures high-quality voice calls and allows users to stay connected smoothly, even in areas with weak mobile network coverage.

How Does VoWiFi Work?

To use VoWiFi, your phone must first connect to a nearby Wi-Fi network. Once connected, your phone checks if the VoWiFi service is available. If it is, your phone will securely communicate with your mobile service provider (such as Nepal Telecom) for authentication. Once verified, your phone is ready to make and receive calls via VoWiFi.

When making a call, your phone converts your voice into digital data packets, which are sent over the Wi-Fi network to your service provider’s server. The server then converts the data into a standard telephone signal and routes the call to the intended phone number. The person receiving the call might not even realize it’s coming via VoWiFi, as it appears just like a regular phone call.

Benefits of VoWiFi

  1. Better Call Quality: VoWiFi offers better call quality than traditional mobile networks because Wi-Fi connections are typically faster and more stable.
  2. Works in Low Signal Areas: It’s perfect for areas with weak mobile signals, like thick-walled buildings or rural locations.
  3. Lower Battery Consumption: Using VoWiFi tends to consume less battery than traditional mobile network calls.

Requirements for VoWiFi

  • Your phone must support VoWiFi, which most modern smartphones do.
  • Your mobile service provider must offer VoWiFi (currently, Nepal Telecom is the only provider offering it in Nepal).
  • Your phone must be connected to an active Wi-Fi network.
  • You need to enable the VoWiFi service in your phone’s settings, typically under “Wi-Fi Calling” or “VoWiFi.”

Cost

  • Within Nepal: VoWiFi calls are charged according to your regular voice/SMS package or pay-as-you-go rates.
  • From abroad: Incoming calls are free, while outgoing calls cost three rupees per minute.

VoWiFi is a revolutionary service making communication easier and more reliable, especially in areas where traditional mobile networks struggle
