NewJeans Announces Hiatus Amid Legal Battle with ADOR

K-pop group NewJeans, performing under the name NJZ, has announced a temporary hiatus following their recent appearance at ComplexCon. However, their decision has sparked controversy, with their agency, ADOR, expressing disapproval and claiming the move was made unilaterally.

ADOR’s Response to NJZ’s Actions

Last week, a Seoul court ruled in favor of ADOR, upholding its authority as the official agency representing NewJeans until a final decision is reached in the ongoing contract dispute. Despite this, the group performed at ComplexCon on March 23 under the name NJZ and even sold merchandise featuring the rebranded name.

In response, ADOR released a statement on Monday expressing disappointment. The agency stated, “We consider it deeply regretful that, despite the court’s decision, NewJeans proceeded with their performance under a different name and unilaterally announced a hiatus. In accordance with our valid exclusive contract, we will continue to do our utmost for NewJeans and hope to meet with the members soon to discuss their future.”

During their performance, NJZ addressed their fans, explaining their decision to temporarily step away from activities. A member of the group shared, “This stage means so much to us and to every single one of you who gives us strength just by being here. It’s really hard for us to say this, but this might be our last performance for a little while. Out of respect for the court’s decision, we’ve decided to pause all activities for now.”

Acknowledging the difficulties they have faced, NJZ added, “We knew from the beginning that this journey wouldn’t be easy. While we accept the court’s ruling, we had to stand up for our values, dignity, and rights. It was not an easy choice, but it is one we do not regret.”

Background and Ongoing Dispute

NewJeans, consisting of members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, debuted under ADOR on July 22, 2022. However, recent tensions between the group and their agency have led to legal battles regarding their contracts and independence. ADOR had sought and secured a court injunction preventing the members from engaging in independent activities under the NJZ name.

As the legal dispute continues, both ADOR and NewJeans remain at an impasse regarding the group’s future. Fans now await further updates on whether the group and their agency can reach a resolution.
