In the last eight months, over 14 lakh smartphones worth approximately 21 billion rupees have been imported to Nepal. According to the latest data released by the Customs Department, this surge in imports took place from the start of the fiscal year 2081/82 up to the end of the month of Falgun.
Revenue Generation from Smartphone Imports
Between July and February of this fiscal year, 14,07,078 smartphones were imported to Nepal, with a total value of 21.91 billion rupees. The state collected a significant 4.08 billion rupees in revenue from these imports.
Other Tech Gadgets Enter Nepal’s Market
During the same period, 1,30,735 smartwatches were also imported. These smartwatches were valued at 227.27 million rupees, with the government generating 68.32 million rupees in revenue from their import.
Routers and Other Electronics Show Strong Demand
A noticeable increase in router imports was also observed. A total of 4,87,320 routers, valued at 1.25 billion rupees, were brought into the country. The government collected 23.35 million rupees in revenue from router imports.
Sims and Memory Cards: Rising Imports
In addition, Nepal imported 10,85,019 SIM cards during this period, totaling 54.45 million rupees. This brought in 1.33 million rupees in revenue for the state. Similarly, memory cards worth 2.08 million rupees were also imported, generating 517,300 rupees in revenue.
Power Banks: A Significant Import Trend
Power banks have seen a sharp rise in imports, with 2,21,992 units worth 12.94 million rupees brought into the country. The state earned 56.44 million rupees in revenue from power bank imports.
Tech Imports on the Rise in Nepal
Overall, the trend of increasing tech gadget imports, particularly smartphones, smartwatches, and power banks, reflects a growing demand for advanced technology in Nepal. With the government collecting significant revenue from these imports, it highlights the increasing role of digital products in the Nepali market.
