Alexandra Eala, a 19-year-old wildcard from the Philippines, pulled off a massive upset at the Miami Open by defeating world number two Iga Swiatek 6-2, 7-5 to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Ranked 140th in the world, Eala became the first woman from her country to reach the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event and now goes one step further with this stunning victory.
Eala Shocks Swiatek in Straight Sets
Eala took full advantage of an uncharacteristically off-day from Swiatek, dominating the first set and showing resilience in the second. Despite trailing 4-2, she fought back and broke Swiatek’s serve eight times in total. The match ended when Eala broke again at 6-5, leaving her visibly emotional.
“I’m just in disbelief right now. It’s so surreal,” Eala said after her victory. “I’m so happy and blessed to compete against such a great player on this stage.”
Beating the Best on Her Way to the Top
Eala has been in incredible form, having already defeated two Grand Slam champions—Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys—before her win over four-time French Open winner Swiatek.
“I’m trusting my shots, and my team keeps telling me I can do it,” she said.
Having trained at Rafael Nadal’s academy in Spain since the age of 13, Eala was supported by Toni Nadal, Rafa’s uncle and former coach, who watched from her player’s box.
“It meant a lot that he showed up. It showed the confidence he and the academy have in me,” she added.
Next Challenge: Pegula or Raducanu
Eala will now face either Britain’s Emma Raducanu or American Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals.
“Just because I won today doesn’t mean the next match will be easier. If anything, it will be tougher, and I’ll need to give everything I have,” she said.
Swiatek Looks Ahead to Clay Season
Swiatek admitted she struggled with her game, particularly her forehand, but praised Eala’s performance.
“I’m sure I wasn’t playing my best, but Alexandra took her chances and deserved to win,” Swiatek said. “I don’t want to dwell on this loss. The clay season is ahead, and I’m excited for what’s next.”
