One Tourist from Nepalgunj-1 found the beauty of Chyama Tal in Bardiya stunning. She visited the lake for the first time with her family on Friday, despite it being close to her home.
“I had never visited this lake in a neighboring district before, but I enjoyed it a lot,” she said.
Chyama Tal is located in the community forest area of Swargadwari, surrounded by greenery. The lake lies in the Ranjhatapu area of Bansgadhi Municipality-2 in Bardiya. She encouraged others to visit and enjoy the beautiful views of the lake.
Anisha Basnet, from Nepalgunj-18 in Banke, also frequently visits Chyama Tal for picnics. She enjoys the natural beauty and peaceful environment there, whether visiting with friends, and family or for a picnic. “I like spending time in nature, so I regularly come here,” Sangita shared. “The beauty of this place is so captivating, and it brings a special kind of happiness.”
Bikram Dahal from Bardiya Badhaiyatal-4, who also came for a picnic, shared the same opinion. Though he had heard about Chyama Tal before, it was his first time visiting with friends. “It is as beautiful and attractive as my friends described,” he said.
The local government of Bansgadhi Municipality spent NPR 3 million to develop a picnic area at Chyama Tal, as explained by Ward Chairman Arjun Khadka. The area, once a water source in the year 2062/63, was gradually sinking. To preserve it, the community forest invested some money to create a boundary and build a dam, turning it into a lake.
In 2074 Bansgadhi Municipality officially declared the area a wetland and named it Chyama Tal as a joint effort with Bardiya National Park. Since then, the number of internal tourists visiting the lake has been steadily increasing.
The former Mayor of Bansgadhi Municipality, Salikram Adhikari, inaugurated the lake and picnic area in 2074. He emphasized that the community should take responsibility for preserving the natural beauty of the wetland and developing it into a tourist spot.
Chairman Khadka also mentioned that the lake’s water flows continuously, attracting wildlife that comes to drink. The lake covers nearly seven hectares of land in the Middle Community Forest’s wetland area. With a length of 1,100 meters and a width of 800 meters, Chyama Tal is home to diverse wildlife and bird species.
The lake’s promotion includes the Bansgadhi Municipality logo, highlighting the significance of the Chyama wetland area. The lake, which lies nearly 12 kilometers from the East-West Mahendra Highway, is easily accessible for internal tourists from Banke and Bardiya.
Chyama Tal’s natural beauty, wildlife, and birds make it a special place, and with proper management, it aims to become a significant tourist destination.
