Cow Forced into River in the Name of Ritual in Bajura

A disturbing video from Jagannath Rural Municipality in Bajura has surfaced, showing a group of people brutally forcing a cow into the Karnali River. The video, which went viral on social media, has sparked outrage, with many condemning the act as blind superstition rather than tradition.

What Happened?

The footage shows around two dozen people gathered on the riverbank. A black cow is repeatedly beaten with sticks, ropes, and stones as it resists being pushed into the water. The terrified animal struggles to escape but is continuously attacked until it is forced into the river’s strong currents. Each time it tries to return to the shore, it is met with more stones and forced back into the water.

Why Was This Done?

According to local journalist Dhan Bahadur BC, who recorded and shared the video, this cruel act took place in Ward No. 6 of Jagannath Rural Municipality. It was carried out as part of an old ritual where a cow is “donated” to the river after someone in the village dies. Many believe this practice frees the deceased from sins.

Officials Respond

Local leaders seem unaware of the incident. Jagannath Rural Municipality Chairperson Kali Bahadur Shahi claimed he did not know about the event, stating, “This tradition has existed for a long time, but I didn’t know it had started again.”

Meanwhile, Bajura’s Chief District Officer Meghnath Padhya said authorities are working to stop such practices. “We are making efforts to end this harmful tradition and spreading awareness against it,” he stated.

Public Outrage

The video has led to widespread criticism, with many calling it cruelty rather than a religious act. People are demanding strict action against those involved, urging authorities to put an end to this inhumane practice once and for all.
