Dan Ashworth is back at the Football Association (FA) as the new chief football officer. The 54-year-old, who briefly worked as Manchester United’s sporting director, now leads England’s men’s and women’s teams in his newly created role.

Dan Ashworth’s Impact at the FA and Beyond

Dan Ashworth previously served as the FA’s director of elite development from 2013 to 2018. During that time, he played a key role in England reaching the 2018 World Cup semi-finals. After leaving the FA, he held important roles at Brighton and Newcastle before joining Manchester United in 2024.

Manchester United Tenure and Controversy

His time at Manchester United was short-lived and costly. Ashworth’s recruitment and early exit reportedly cost the club £4.1 million. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe called Ashworth’s appointment and the retention of then-manager Erik ten Hag “errors.” Despite this, Ashworth’s reputation as a skilled football administrator remains strong.

New Responsibilities at the FA

As chief football officer, Dan Ashworth will oversee the England men’s and women’s teams, working closely with men’s technical director John McDermott and the successor to Kay Cossington for the women’s team. He will also manage the development of St. George’s Park, the FA’s national training centre.

A Trusted Leader for England Football

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham praised Ashworth as a “hugely influential and respected figure” with a deep commitment to English football. His return is seen as a major boost for the future of both England’s teams and football development
