Gael Monfils made history at the Miami Open by becoming the second-oldest man to win a match in the tournament’s history. At 38 years old, he follows Jimmy Connors, who holds the record after winning in Miami at age 39 back in 1992.

Monfils defeated last year’s quarterfinalist, Fabian Marozsan, in a tough three-set match, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The Frenchman hit 38 winners and made just 18 unforced errors, securing his spot in the second round. He will now face Jiri Lehecka.

“I used different angles and moved well on the court. I made it difficult for him and didn’t let him control the game,” Monfils said after his victory.

In other Miami Open matches:

  • Alexander Bublik earned his first outdoor tour-level win of 2025 by beating Sebastian Baez 6-3, 6-4. This was his first victory in Miami since 2022, and he will now face Tommy Paul.
  • David Goffin fought back from a set down to defeat Aleksandar Vukic 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The 34-year-old Belgian, a former semi-finalist in Miami, will now play second seed Carlos Alcaraz.
  • Rinky Hijikata edged out Hamad Medjedovic 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 and will take on Novak Djokovic in the next round.
  • Tristan Schoolkate, an Australian qualifier, dominated Ethan Quinn 6-0, 6-2 to set up a clash with Felix Auger-Aliassime.
  • Federico Cina, a 17-year-old Italian, won his first ATP match by beating Francisco Comesana in two tie-break sets (7-6(4), 7-6(2)). Cina had to fight hard, missing a match point at 5-3 but recovering to secure the win. His next challenge will be Grigor Dimitrov.

The Miami Open continues with exciting matchups ahead as top players prepare to enter the competition.
