England cricket team captain Jos Buttler has announced that he is stepping down from the captaincy of limited-overs cricket. His decision comes after England’s disappointing performance in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy, where they were eliminated in the group stage.
England’s final match under Buttler’s captaincy will be against South Africa on Saturday. Speaking about his decision, Buttler said, “I want to step down as captain. This is the right decision for me and for the team.”
England, placed in Group B, lost to both Australia and Afghanistan, leading to their early exit from the tournament. Meanwhile, Australia and Afghanistan played their match on Friday to determine the semi-final standings.
Buttler’s leadership has faced challenges in major tournaments. Under his captaincy, England also had a poor campaign in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India, finishing seventh out of ten teams. Additionally, they were eliminated in the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 by India.
However, Buttler also led England to a major triumph, winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. England defeated Pakistan in the final by five wickets, and Buttler’s batting throughout the tournament was exceptional, playing a crucial role in the team’s success.
His decision to step down marks the end of his tenure as England’s limited-overs captain, and the team will now look for a new leader to rebuild for future competitions.
