Kay Burley has announced she is retiring from Sky News after working at the broadcaster for 36 years.
In her final show on the Sky News Breakfast programme, Burley said:
“From starting out to becoming one of the most recognized brands in global news, it’s been an honor to work with some of the best and hardest working teams.
News can be very sad, and together we’ve covered many life-changing events – from Princess Diana’s death, the 9/11 attacks, the Asian Tsunami, and the Concorde crash. But we’ve also celebrated great moments, like London winning the bid for the 2012 Olympics, royal weddings, jubilees, and the long waits for royal babies at the Lindo Wing.
After over a million minutes of live TV news – more than anyone else – it’s time for me to focus on other passions, like traveling.
So, after covering 12 general elections, including Sir Keir Starmer’s win last year, I’m retiring from Sky News. Politicians from all parties can celebrate this news!
Thank you for tuning in every morning. I’ve truly appreciated your support over the last 36 years – you’re awesome.
I’ll post more on social media and hope to stay in touch.”
Burley was part of the team that launched Sky News in 1989 and has covered major stories, including Princess Diana’s death. Her live coverage of 9/11 won Sky News a BAFTA award.
