Korala border in Mustang to be fully operational

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced that preparations are underway to fully operate the Korala border point in Mustang by developing the necessary infrastructure and logistics.

Alternative Route After Rasuwagadhi Closure

Following the collapse of the Miteri bridge in Rasuwagadhi due to a flash flood on Asar 24, PM Oli visited the area and directed concerned ministries to expedite work on alternative trade routes and border access, including Korala.

Focus on Infrastructure Development

Oli recalled several initiatives he took in Mustang, including the Benighat-Korala road project, arranging Indian PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Muktinath, initiating the Muktinath cable car project, and promoting apple farming and Chyangra goat rearing.

Request to Revise Tourism Royalty

A delegation of local representatives urged the PM to reconsider the USD 500 permit fee imposed on foreign tourists visiting Lomanthang and Damodar Kunda, saying it discourages tourism in the region.

Demand for Road Paving and Infrastructure

Representatives demanded blacktopping of the Kagbeni–Korala section under the Kaligandaki Corridor and construction of key facilities at the Korala checkpoint—customs office, immigration, integrated security post, and dry port.

Business Losses in Upper Mustang

Due to the lack of road access and implementation of the restricted zone policy, hoteliers and local businesses in Upper Mustang are facing significant financial losses.

Government Response & Way Forward

PM Oli directed his private secretariat to coordinate with relevant agencies to address the demands. A team led by Private Secretary Vinod Bahadur Kunwar recently conducted a field visit and submitted a report on the steps required to operationalize the Korala border and adjoining infrastructure.
