The Brit Awards paid tribute to the late Liam Payne, who tragically passed away at 31 in October after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. During the ceremony, Jack Whitehall led a heartfelt memorial video celebrating the life and accomplishments of the beloved pop star.
With a somber tone, Whitehall addressed the audience, saying, “It is now time to remember a very special person who meant so much to many of us here and to millions around the world. Last October, we woke up to the heartbreaking news that Liam Payne had tragically passed away.”
He continued, “In the short time he was with us, Liam achieved so much. He was not only an incredibly talented musician but a kind-hearted soul who touched everyone he met. Tonight, we honor his legacy and celebrate the remarkable Liam Payne.”
The tribute featured a video showcasing key moments of Payne’s career, from his time on The X Factor to his success with One Direction, which won seven Brit Awards. His hit song “Little Things” played in the background, alongside a montage that included his meeting with Queen Elizabeth II. The video also featured a clip of Payne reflecting on his journey, saying, “We thought something might happen, but never anything like this. I always remind myself of where I came from and how far I’ve come—it’s amazing.”
Liam Payne, along with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, gained fame as part of One Direction, formed through The X Factor. Payne later pursued a successful solo career, releasing his LP1 album in 2019, with hits like “Polaroid,” “Strip That Down,” and “For You,” featuring Rita Ora.
Though most of One Direction’s members did not attend this year’s Brit Awards, they all gathered in November to mourn Payne’s passing at his funeral.
