A woman recently shared a post on social media saying her cousin’s brother lost his job at Microsoft USA. She said this showed how unstable tech jobs are, and why parents always advise aiming for government jobs. She wrote, “Tech is not a stable place. That’s why parents tell us to prepare for government jobs. At least there is job security.”
Rahul Rana, a Google engineer from Bengaluru, disagreed with the idea. He said tech jobs may not be as secure, but they offer much higher pay. “Why worry about job security when you can earn five times more than a government employee in just a few years?” he tweeted. Others agreed and said that one layoff doesn’t erase the fact that people in tech can earn far more in a short time.
The original poster, Sneha, argued that government jobs in India come with benefits like free housing, electricity, and allowances. She mentioned a family member in a state government job who now owns a villa in Dubai, suggesting that financial stability is still possible in government service.
Many people joined the debate online. Some defended tech jobs for their freedom and career growth, while others highlighted the slow but steady nature of government roles. One user wrote, “If someone cracked Microsoft once, they can do it again. Tech gives you fast growth and freedom.”
Another said, “My dad worked in a government job for 20 years, but my first salary in an MNC was double his. So you tell me which is better.” Another added, “With smart money management and a Microsoft tag on your CV, he won’t stay unemployed for long.”
Microsoft recently laid off more employees as part of its strategy to stay competitive. These job cuts follow a 2023 round where 10,000 jobs were removed, mostly in software engineering and product management. Most of the recent layoffs were from the Washington area, especially from the Redmond headquarters.
The company says it’s adjusting its workforce to better integrate AI into products and services. CEO Satya Nadella explained that Microsoft is trying to focus more on high-value work and automate routine tasks. He added that the company is being careful because of the uncertain economy and fear of a possible recession.
