The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has reached 704. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) suspects that thousands of people may have died in the disaster. The tremors were felt in Thailand, Bangladesh, China, and India.
Myanmar’s military government has confirmed at least 694 deaths and 1,670 injuries. Meanwhile, Thailand has reported 10 fatalities.
The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.7, struck Myanmar on Friday morning. It is considered the strongest earthquake to hit Myanmar and Thailand in the past 200 years. Due to the widespread destruction, a state of emergency has been declared across six states in Myanmar and throughout Thailand.
The Red Cross has reported difficulties in reaching affected areas such as Mandalay, Sagaing, and southern Shan State due to power supply disruptions.
According to the Red Cross’ initial assessment, the earthquake has caused severe damage. They are currently gathering more details to provide humanitarian assistance.
To support relief efforts in Myanmar and Thailand, the Red Cross has pledged $150,000, which will be used for essential supplies such as food, water, blankets, tarpaulins, and hygiene kits.
14 Aftershocks Hit Myanmar After the Earthquake
According to the USGS, Myanmar has experienced 14 aftershocks following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday. Most of these aftershocks had a magnitude of less than 5.
The strongest aftershock measured 6.7 in magnitude and occurred approximately 10 minutes after the main earthquake.
