The Nepal cricket team received a warm farewell at Upper Mulpani Cricket Ground on Wednesday as they embarked on a crucial tour of the United Kingdom. The journey includes stops in England, Wales, and eventually Scotland, where they will play in the CWC League 2 tri-series against the Netherlands and hosts Scotland in June.
New Coach and Vice-Captain Represent the Team
While new head coach Stuart Law and captain Rohit Paudel were not present at the farewell, assistant coach Gyanendra Malla and vice-captain Dipendra Singh Airee stood in their place. “We have a new head coach who understands UK conditions well,” said Malla. “This will really help the Nepal cricket team during the tour.”
Full Schedule of Warm-up Matches
Before the League 2 tri-series, the Nepal cricket team will play several warm-up games:
- May 16: One-day match vs Cardiff University (Cardiff, Wales)
- May 19: One-day match vs MCC (Herefordshire, England)
- May 22: Two T20 matches vs Gloucestershire County Club (England)
- May 26: 50-over match vs Glamorgan County Cricket Club (Wales)
After this, Coach Law will select his final squad of 15 players to head to Scotland.
Practice Matches Before League 2
In Scotland, Nepal will play two one-day practice matches against Scotland ‘A’ on May 29 and May 31 to prepare for the main League 2 event. The tri-series officially kicks off on June 2 and runs through June 12.
“We know the challenges ahead won’t be easy,” said Airee. “But the Nepal cricket team will give its 100 percent.”
Focused on Points and Performance
Malla added that the team’s goal is to gather as many points as possible from the four League 2 matches. After the series, a friendly T20I tri-series featuring the same three teams (Nepal, Scotland, and the Netherlands) will follow.
Sandeep Lamichhane Steps Back from Central Contract
In a surprising move, star leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane announced that he is stepping away from the central contract offered by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) for 2025. He made the announcement via Facebook, clarifying that the decision was made for personal and professional growth.
“This isn’t a step away from cricket or my nation,” wrote Lamichhane. “It’s a step toward evolving.” He thanked CAN for their continued support and confirmed that he will still play for Nepal.
He remains part of the Nepal cricket team for the UK tour and upcoming League 2 series.
Internal Disputes Within CAN
On the same day, Lumbini Province Cricket Association President Sanjay Gurung held a press conference, accusing CAN President Chatur Bahadur Chand of trying to oust him through political tactics. Gurung claimed he received a termination letter signed directly by Chand, bypassing normal procedures.
He also alleged that Chand manipulated provincial officials to register a no-confidence motion against him without any internal discussion.
In response, Chand dismissed these allegations, stating that Gurung had been facing complaints of financial irregularities.
Looking Ahead
Despite the internal issues and off-field news, the focus remains on the Nepal cricket team and their important UK tour. With a new head coach, young talents, and experienced players, fans are hopeful for strong performances in the League 2 tri-series.
