In the first five months of the current fiscal year (2081/82), Nepal exported electricity worth NPR 13.04 billion to India. The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) sold 1.76 billion units of surplus electricity generated during the monsoon season to India. This export covered the months of Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashoj, Kartik, and Mangsir, with an average price of NPR 7.39 per unit.
The electricity was sold through the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) in the day-ahead and real-time markets, and under bilateral agreements with Indian states like Haryana and Bihar. The NEA earned INR 8.15 billion from these transactions.
In Shrawan, the highest export value of NPR 4.15 billion was recorded, while the lowest was in Mangsir at NPR 280 million. Export values for other months were NPR 3.68 billion in Bhadra, NPR 3.07 billion in Ashoj, and NPR 1.87 billion in Kartik.
Floods and landslides during Ashoj damaged the 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Plant, halting production and reducing exports in subsequent months. This year, electricity imports began earlier than last year due to lower hydropower production during the dry season. Additionally, floods in Maikhola disrupted 200 MW of production connected to the Kabeli Corridor, which has now been restored.
The NEA also began exporting 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh via India this year. Despite the challenges, Nepal aims to export electricity worth NPR 30 billion in the current fiscal year, though flood-related damages may affect this target.
In the previous fiscal year, Nepal imported electricity worth NPR 16.93 billion while exporting NPR 17.06 billion, achieving a net surplus of NPR 130 million and marking Nepal as a net electricity exporter.
