A passenger plane carrying dozens of people has gone missing in eastern Russia, triggering a large-scale search operation.

The Angara Airlines AN-24 aircraft, en route to Tynda city in the remote Amur region, lost contact with air traffic control, according to Russian authorities. This area borders China and is known for its rugged terrain.

According to CNN, which cited local officials, the missing aircraft was carrying 49 people, including 43 passengers and 6 crew members. Among the passengers were five children, regional governor Vasily Orlov confirmed. However, the Emergency Ministry has reported that the number of people on board could be closer to 40.

“All necessary security personnel, rescue teams, and resources have been mobilized to locate the missing plane,” Governor Orlov stated.

Efforts to find the aircraft are being hampered by harsh weather conditions and challenging terrain in the region.
