PM Oli Requests Pause on Civil Service Bill What’s the Delay About

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asked lawmakers to wait a little longer before moving forward with the controversial Civil Service Bill. During a discussion with Nepali Congress leaders and members of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee, he expressed concern over two main points: the proposed retirement age and a rule that restricts appointments for retired officials.

The bill, which has been stuck in the House of Representatives since it was submitted on Asar 1, includes a provision to raise the retirement age from 58 to 60 years. It also says that anyone who retires or resigns from civil service must wait two years before being eligible for constitutional or other appointments.

Committee Chairman Ramhari Khatiwada met with PM Oli to discuss the details. Although the bill had passed unanimously at the committee level, it now faces delays in the House.

Congress leaders have warned that keeping the bill on hold sends a negative message. Still, PM Oli has asked for a short wait, leading to uncertainty over when the bill will be pushed ahead. Even the House’s bi-weekly calendar now reflects this pause, listing no clear timeline for debate.
