Nepal’s star leg-spinner, Sandeep Lamichhane, has announced his decision to opt out of the Cricket Association of Nepal‘s (CAN) central contract for the current term. In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Lamichhane emphasized that this move is not a departure from cricket or his national duties but a step towards personal and professional growth.

“After much thought, I have decided not to continue with the contract of the Nepal Cricket Association this time. I do not want to step away from cricket or the nation. This is a personal and professional step forward,” he wrote on social media.

Acknowledging CAN’s Support

Expressing gratitude, Sandeep Lamichhane acknowledged the role of CAN in his cricketing journey, stating, “I am thankful to CAN for their support throughout my career and for their contribution to the growth of cricket in Nepal.”

Continued Commitment to National Team

Despite stepping away from the central contract, Lamichhane remains committed to representing Nepal. He has been included in the national squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup League-2 series in Scotland.

Background and Context

Earlier this year, CAN had awarded Lamichhane a Grade A central contract, alongside players like Rohit Paudel, Dipendra Singh Airee, Sompal Kami, and Aasif Sheikh, with a monthly salary of NPR 100,000. However, Lamichhane’s relationship with CAN has experienced strains, including disciplinary action taken against him in January 2025 over comments made on social media regarding umpiring standards.

Looking Ahead

Lamichhane’s decision reflects a desire to focus on personal development while continuing to contribute to Nepalese cricket. As he remains active in the national team, fans can expect to see him in action during the upcoming series in Scotland.
