Botafogo is planning to strengthen its team for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, and one of the top targets is Thiago Almada. Club owner John Textor is hoping to bring back the talented midfielder, currently playing for Lyon, for the tournament. However, the return of Almada to Botafogo seems unlikely at the moment.
Even though Almada is on loan at Lyon, he is still officially a Botafogo player. Lyon couldn’t sign him permanently at the time due to a transfer ban from FIFA, so a loan deal was arranged.
Thiago Almada Doesn’t Want a Short-Term Return
John Textor already spoke with Thiago Almada and his agents about returning to Botafogo just for the Club World Cup. But Almada is not very interested in this idea. Although he likes Botafogo, a return only for the tournament is not in his plans.
Almada sees himself as a European footballer and wants to stay in Europe. He also hasn’t had proper rest for a long time. After leaving Atlanta United, he played for Argentina in the Olympics, joined Botafogo shortly after, and later participated in the Intercontinental Cup. He had only a one-week break before joining Lyon. Playing the Club World Cup would mean skipping another vacation.
Botafogo Likely to Sell Thiago Almada This Summer
People inside Nilton Santos stadium believe that Almada won’t come back. Instead, they expect a full transfer this summer. Thiago Almada Botafogo chapter might be ending soon as Lyon plans to sell him to get much-needed money. Since all clubs under Textor’s ownership share finances, selling Almada will benefit both Lyon and Botafogo.
Almada’s Performance for Botafogo Was Impressive
During his short spell at the club, Thiago Almada Botafogo performances were crucial. He played 23 matches in the second half of 2024, scored 3 goals, and provided 2 assists. More importantly, he helped the team win both the Brasileirão and the Libertadores titles.

While Botafogo and its fans would love to see Thiago Almada and Botafogo reunion during the Club World Cup, it now seems very unlikely. Almada needs rest and wants to focus on his European career. All signs point to a permanent move away from the Brazilian club in the next transfer window.
