Police have arrested three individuals from a group involved in robbing mobile phones from taxi drivers.
Those arrested include 18-year-old Nawaraj Sunuwar, also known as Shikhar Jung Thapa, originally from Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-1 of Sindhuli and currently residing in Jadibuti, Kathmandu; 18-year-old Rajnish Yadav from Tarapatti Sirsiya Rural Municipality-6 of Dhanusha, currently living in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu; and 27-year-old Suresh Thakur from Garuda Municipality-2 of Rautahat, currently residing in Kapan.
The Kathmandu District Court has granted police five days of custody to carry out further investigation against them.
According to SP and spokesperson of the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range, Apil Raj Bohora, on the afternoon of Baisakh 5 (April 17), around 4 PM, the group approached a taxi with registration number Ba 2 Ja 3458, driven by Prem Tamang from Chitwan, in Basundhara. They inquired about going to Thamel and then took the taxi driver’s phone under the pretense of making a call before fleeing the scene.
Police recovered four stolen mobile phones from the group.
Earlier, on the evening of Chaitra 17 (March 30), around 8 PM, the same group had robbed the mobile phone of taxi driver Kul Bahadur Raut, who was driving a taxi with registration number Ba 2 Ja 9671, from Dhumbarahi Pipalbot.
Two days later, on Chaitra 19 (April 1), around 8 PM, they robbed the phone of taxi driver Rajkumar Tamang from a taxi with registration number Ba 2 Ja 6480, again from Dhumbarahi Pipalbot.
That same night, around 9:30 PM, they fled after robbing the phone of Rajesh Bahadur B.C., the driver of a taxi with registration number Ba 2 Ja 4303, from Sapredhunga in Budhanilkantha.
On the evening of Chaitra 23 (April 4), around 6 PM, they also robbed a person named Durga Shakya near Om Hospital in Chabahil, according to police.
