Nepal’s hotel industry has a fixed investment of NPR 550 billion. According to the “National Hotel and Restaurant Survey 2080,” published by the National Statistics Office on Wednesday, the total fixed assets of hotels amount to NPR 543.25 billion.
According to the data, the hotel industry has received over NPR 10.5 billion in foreign investment. Nepal has 142,223 hotels/restaurants. Dr. Hem Raj Regmi, Deputy Chief Statistician at the office, stated that this survey is the first comprehensive survey of its kind. Previously, the “Hotel and Lodge Survey 2060” was conducted, which only included star hotels, resorts, and non-star hotels related to the accommodation and food service sector.
Dr. Regmi mentioned that this survey included detailed data on hotels, lodges, resorts, homestays, guesthouses/service centers, hostels, restaurants, and catering/party palaces, making it the first extensive survey. Among the approximately 150,000 hotels nationwide, 1,121 have full foreign investment, of which 1,073 are solely foreign-owned, and 48 are joint foreign investments. Additionally, 59 hotels have joint investments by Nepali and foreign investors.
The office collected, processed, analyzed, and managed data on accommodation and food service establishments operating across the country in the fiscal year 2079/80. It is believed that the survey results will help measure the hospitality sector’s contribution to the economy.
The survey covered the period from Shrawan 1, 2079, to Ashad 30, 2080 (July 2022 to July 2023). As stated in a press release by the office, full enumeration was carried out for star hotels and resorts with operating permits from the Department of Tourism and establishments employing 10 or more individuals.
According to the data, there are 493 hotels/restaurants with fixed assets exceeding NPR 100 million, of which 214 are located in the Bagmati Province. There are 8,732 hotels with assets ranging from NPR 10 million to NPR 100 million, while 67,521 hotels/restaurants were established with an investment of less than NPR 200,000.
The data reveals that out of all the hotels/restaurants operating nationwide, 137,716 establishments are owned solely by Nepali citizens, with total assets valued at around NPR 418.62 billion. Additionally, 3,327 hotels/establishments operate under joint Nepali ownership, with investments totaling NPR 114 billion. Only 59 hotels/restaurants operate with joint Nepali and foreign investment. According to the survey, the number of individuals employed in accommodation and food service establishments stands at 105,459.
