Television actress Nyrraa Banerji, who rose to popularity with her role in Pishachini, recently opened up about why she has been missing from the small screen. Though she was last seen in Bigg Boss 18, her stint in the reality show was short-lived. Despite that, she managed to leave a lasting impression on the audience. In an exclusive interview with Zoom/Telly Talk India, Nyrraa revealed the real reason behind her long break from television.
“I’m Very Adamant About Choosing My Roles”
Nyrraa candidly admitted that she has distanced herself from TV projects mainly because of being typecast in supernatural roles. She shared, “After Pishachini, almost 90% of the roles I was offered were in supernatural dramas. I didn’t want to do them. My first show was supernatural, the second was different, and then again the third was supernatural. TV tends to stereotype actors easily, and I’m not okay with that. I want to explore varied characters and showcase my versatility as an actor.”
Calling herself “adamant,” Nyrraa stressed that she wants to break the mold and not be limited to one genre. “Just because I’ve performed well in one space doesn’t mean I should be stuck there. I believe I can bring justice to any character I take on,” she added.
“TV Actors Aren’t Paid What They Deserve”
Besides creative dissatisfaction, Nyrraa also pointed out the industry’s financial limitations. According to her, the budget constraints have become a big concern. “The market has dropped drastically, and lead actors aren’t being paid what they truly deserve,” she noted. “Also, I expect convenience in shoot locations and want the project’s budget to align with my standards.”
She added that she often gets offers for two types of roles: either a glamorous lead in supernatural shows or a royal, princess-like character. “Both these kinds of shows require big budgets. Unfortunately, producers are not willing to match those expectations anymore.”
On the Current State of Indian Television
When asked about the ongoing criticism of Indian TV shows being regressive, Nyrraa admitted she hasn’t been watching much television lately. “Nowadays, it has become a trend to make village-based stories. Eventually, all of them start looking the same. I would actually love to play a village girl, but I haven’t received such offers. Maybe because people perceive me as too glamorous,” she said.
Nyrraa believes the industry often chooses to highlight regressive content on purpose—to eventually show progress. “That’s the pattern most shows follow. And while urban audiences may critique them, women in rural areas connect with those narratives deeply. After all, the majority of TV viewership in India still comes from rural regions.”
