Over 10,000 protesters gathered in New York City on Presidents’ Day to voice their opposition to the current Trump administration, particularly criticizing the actions of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This protest was one of many held across major U.S. cities, following smaller demonstrations at Tesla dealerships nationwide.
Protesters raised concerns about DOGE’s access to sensitive personal data of millions of Americans and its role in dismantling federal agencies. Many feared that Musk, an unelected figure, has gained undue power over the federal government, potentially using it for financial gain. Dmitri, a protester from Washington Square Park, expressed concerns over Musk’s influence, stating that Musk, a “futurist fanboy,” lacks the understanding necessary to handle such power. Another protester, Tom, noted that no one voted for Musk, highlighting the undemocratic nature of his influence.
DOGE, created through an executive order by Trump, was tasked with reducing government fraud, waste, and inefficiency. However, since its inception, DOGE has fired thousands of federal workers, including those managing lands and caring for veterans, and cut several diversity and inclusion programs. The department has also gained control over the Treasury’s digital payment system, which handles trillions of dollars in payments, raising concerns about its security practices and legality.
While supporters of Trump and Musk argue that DOGE’s actions aim to eliminate corruption, critics warn that it may lead to further corruption and pose national security risks. Legal challenges have surfaced, claiming a lack of transparency and violations of privacy.
The protest in New York began at Union Square and ended at Washington Square Park, with attendees chanting slogans like “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Elon Musk has got to go.” Many carried signs with various political messages, but Musk and DOGE were central themes. One protester, Victoria, a 37-year-old teacher, held a sign reading, “Stop the coup,” echoing concerns voiced by others about the unconstitutional concentration of power in Musk’s hands.
Small business owner Corwin criticized Musk for his conflicting interests and antiregulatory stance, which he argued benefits Musk financially and personally. Musk’s recent proposals to eliminate or reduce regulatory agencies, such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Aviation Administration, have only fueled this backlash.
Musk’s actions at the federal level have had a negative impact on Tesla’s brand. As competition in the automotive industry increases, Tesla’s sales have begun to suffer, particularly in Europe, where some countries have even called for boycotts due to Musk’s controversial political affiliations. The fallout from his support for Trump and the far-right political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has resulted in damaged relationships and a decline in Tesla’s reputation.
