The 2025 All England Open badminton tournament is set to begin in Birmingham on Tuesday. Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will be leading India’s challenge in the competition. Sindhu, who is currently ranked 15th in the world, will be playing her first tournament since the Indonesia Masters in January. Another Indian player in the women’s singles category is Malvika Bansod, who is ranked 28th in the world.
Men’s Singles Competition
In the men’s singles competition, Lakshya Sen is the highest-ranked Indian player, holding the world number 10 spot. HS Prannoy, ranked 30th, is also in the tournament. If both players perform well, they could face each other in the quarterfinals.
Lakshya Sen had a strong run in the tournament last year, reaching the semifinals before losing to Jonatan Christie, who went on to win the championship. Two years ago, Sen was the runner-up in the men’s singles competition.
Men’s Doubles Competition
India’s top men’s doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who are ranked seventh in the world, will also compete in the tournament. They have not played since the Indonesia Masters in January.
Women’s Doubles Competition
India will have multiple pairs competing in the women’s doubles category. The two-time All England semifinalist duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will be representing India. Other Indian pairs in the tournament include Tanisha Crasto-Ashwini Ponnappa and Priya Konjengbam-Shruti Mishra.
Mixed Doubles Competition
The mixed doubles event will feature three Indian pairs: Rohan Kapoor-Ruthvika Gadde, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran-Aadya Variyath, and Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto.
Importance of the All England Open
The All England Open is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour. So far, only two Indian players, Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand, have won the singles title at this historic event. Indian players will be hoping to make history in the 2025 edition of the tournament.
