Rabi Lamichhane, President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, has been suspended from his position as a federal MP.
The Federal Parliament Secretariat issued the suspension notice on Monday after receiving a letter from the District Police Office, Kaski, via email on Sunday.
Lamichhane’s suspension follows the filing of a case by the District Government Attorney’s Office at the Kaski District Court. The case involves charges of money laundering, cooperative fraud, and organized crime, with a claim of embezzlement amounting to Rs. 27 crore.
Speaker Devraj Ghimire sought legal advice throughout Monday after receiving the police letter. Based on legal provisions, he issued the suspension notice.
According to the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2064 (with amendments), any public officeholder charged with money laundering is automatically suspended from their position.
The case against Lamichhane, along with 44 others, has been registered at the Kaski District Court. The court will now conduct a hearing to decide whether Lamichhane should remain in custody during the trial.
Lamichhane was elected twice from the Chitwan-2 constituency. His suspension will remain effective until the case is resolved, as per the legal provisions.
