Real Madrid suffered a major setback in the La Liga title race after losing 2-1 to Real Betis at the Benito Villamarín. Despite scoring early, Madrid could not hold their lead and struggled to respond after Betis took control in the second half.

Strong Start, but Madrid Lose Grip

Madrid began well, with Brahim Diaz stepping up in the absence of Jude Bellingham. In the 10th minute, he finished a smooth move involving Kylian Mbappe and Ferland Mendy. Mendy made a clever cutback, and Diaz placed his shot into the net.

Instead of pushing for more goals, Madrid allowed Betis to grow into the game. Playing in heavy rain, the home team gained confidence, and Isco started to control the midfield. Just before halftime, Isco delivered a great corner, and Johnny Cardoso headed the ball past Thibaut Courtois to make it 1-1.

Isco’s Penalty Secures Victory

Betis continued to dominate after the break. In the 53rd minute, Antonio Rüdiger fouled Jesus Rodriguez inside the box, leading to a penalty. Isco, a former Madrid player, calmly scored from the spot, giving Betis the lead.

Madrid struggled to create clear chances after going behind. Vinícius Junior and Endrick tried to break through, but Betis’ defense stayed strong. Madrid looked less energetic, possibly thinking ahead to their Champions League game.

La Liga Standings

This loss leaves Real Madrid tied on points with Barcelona, but Madrid has played one more game. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid took advantage by beating Athletic Club 1-0, thanks to a 66th-minute goal from Julián Álvarez. Atletico now leads the table with 56 points, two more than both Barcelona and Madrid.

Betis now has 38 points from 26 games and moves closer to the European qualification spots. With the title race getting tighter, Madrid must recover quickly to stay in the fight for the league and their Champions League ambitions.
