In the past five months, Koshi Province has witnessed a total of 2,092 motorcycle accidents. From the beginning of the current fiscal year (mid-July) to the end of the month of Mangsir (mid-December), there have been 3,498 road accidents across the province, according to the Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office in Itahari.

“Motorcycle accidents have been the most common, followed by accidents involving tempos, jeeps, and cars”, said Rameshwor Twati, the information officer at the office.

He pointed out that the ongoing upgrade of the East-West Highway, including the Asian Highway, has contributed to the rise in accidents. The lack of proper zebra crossings and traffic signals has worsened the situation. “Motorcyclists often ride at high speeds recklessly, which has resulted in numerous fatalities,” Twati explained.

During this period, 191 people lost their lives in road accidents, and 327 others were seriously injured.
