India’s upcoming five-match Test series against England is turning into a selection nightmare. The sudden retirement of captain Rohit Sharma from Test cricket has already shocked fans. Rohit, who played 67 Test matches, recently called time on his career in the longest format.

Mohammed Shami’s Fitness Adds to the Woes
As if the team wasn’t already facing enough problems, Mohammed Shami fitness has become a fresh concern. According to a report by The Times of India, the injury-prone pacer is no longer a sure-shot selection for the England series.
Shami has been struggling with form and fitness ever since returning from an Achilles tendon injury he picked up during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Not at His Best, Even in IPL
Sources from the BCCI told the national daily that Shami is still far from his best. “He’s not been in rhythm for a long time. Even in the IPL, he’s having trouble finishing his run-up, and the ball isn’t carrying to the wicketkeeper like it used to. After short spells, he often heads back to the dressing room to recover,” they said.
A Long Layoff and a Tough Comeback
Shami missed the entire year of 2024 due to injury. He returned in February 2025 during a T20I series against England and has since played in the Champions Trophy and the ongoing IPL 2025.
Bumrah’s Workload Another Concern
Adding to the challenge, selectors are also trying to carefully manage Jasprit Bumrah workload. He recently returned from a back injury that he picked up during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
What Happens If Both Are Unavailable?
“The original idea was to have at least one of Shami or Bumrah available for each Test match,” the source added. “But if Bumrah needs rest and Shami isn’t fully fit, the selectors will be in a tough spot. They’re still trying to figure out the root of Shami’s issues.”
