Rohit Sharma has confirmed that he is not retiring from One Day Internationals (ODIs). After leading India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit made a clear statement about his future. Even though he avoided the topic throughout the press conference, he addressed it right before leaving.

Rohit Sharma Ends Retirement Speculations

Rohit clarified his decision with a short but strong statement:

“One more thing. I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure there are no rumours spread moving forward. Thank you so much.”

This announcement was expected, even though there were many rumours about his retirement. Some reports claimed that Rohit would retire on March 9, 2025. The speculation started during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy when he dropped himself from the Playing XI before the Sydney Test. However, three months later, Rohit has shown his commitment to continuing.

Rohit Talks About India’s Success

During the press conference, Rohit was asked about his future, and he initially gave a brief answer:

“Abhi dekhte hai (Let’s see). Winning two ICC trophies is a big achievement. Going undefeated is icing on the cake. I have seen very few teams who have won two tournaments undefeated. It was important for us to come here and prepare well. We utilised the conditions well. There are no future plans. What is going on currently will continue to go on ahead.”

What’s Next for Rohit Sharma?

Although Rohit has confirmed he will continue playing ODIs, it is unclear whether he will play in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. Rohit has already achieved something only MS Dhoni had done before—winning multiple ICC trophies. In fact, he has surpassed Dhoni by winning the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy in just nine months.

If not for Australia defeating India on November 19, Rohit would have won all three major ICC trophies within two years.

India’s Future Leadership

Even though Rohit is performing well and playing important innings, he may decide to step down as India’s captain at some point. In the Champions Trophy final, he scored a crucial 76 runs, helping India chase down 252 runs against New Zealand.

If Rohit continues playing until the 2027 World Cup, he will be 40 years old by then. It is uncertain whether he will still be the captain. If he steps down, his current deputy, Shubman Gill, might take over as India’s next ODI captain.
