A brand-new chapter in the Star Wars universe has been officially announced by Lucasfilm, with Ryan Gosling set to take the lead in the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter. The announcement was made during the Star Wars Celebration event held in Japan on Thursday night.

A Fresh Journey in the Galaxy Far, Far Away

According to a statement from Lucasfilm, Star Wars: Starfighter is set five years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, the film that concluded the Skywalker saga. The upcoming movie will feature a completely new storyline and cast of characters, exploring a previously unseen era in the Star Wars timeline. Although this time period has been touched upon in non-canon books and games, it has yet to make an appearance on screen.

Reuters confirmed that the film will be “an entirely new adventure” and promises to delve into uncharted territory within the Star Wars universe.

Creative Forces Behind the Film

Shawn Levy, best known for his work on Marvel’s 2024 Deadpool & Wolverine and Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things, is set to direct the film. Production is expected to begin in the fall of 2025.

Ryan Gosling, a three-time Academy Award nominee, will take on the lead role. His most recent nomination came for his performance as Ken in 2023’s Barbie.

Star Wars Legacy Continues

Created by George Lucas in 1977, Star Wars remains one of the most iconic franchises in cinema history. With global box office earnings exceeding $5.1 billion, the franchise includes nine main saga films, two stand-alone features, and 17 television series across both animated and live-action formats.

Star Wars: Starfighter is slated to hit theaters in May 2027, ushering in a bold new era for the beloved galaxy-spanning saga.
