Comedian Shashi Dhiman says staying unapologetic on stage means being true to yourself, even when it feels hard.

Comedian Shashi Dhiman believes that comedy should mix humor with sensitivity, especially when dealing with real-life stories and common stereotypes. She tries to create jokes that feel honest and relatable without hurting anyone’s feelings.

Finding comedy in real-life experiences

Shashi says she always approaches her comedy with empathy and self-awareness. “My goal is not to offend but to reflect real life in a way people can connect with,” she explains. “I ask myself if a joke adds something meaningful or just repeats frustration. When the joke comes from truth and shared experience, it usually feels warm, not judgmental. I also laugh at myself first—it sets the right mood.”

Overcoming stereotypes in comedy

Shashi has faced many stereotypes on her journey. People have told her she’s “funny for a girl” or assumed she only tells relationship jokes. “The best way to fight these ideas is by showing up, being consistent, and letting my work speak for itself. Over time, the story changes and so do expectations,” she says. Recently, she took part in Foxtale’s comedy event No Fox Given in Mumbai, where comedians tackled stereotypes through their acts.

Staying unapologetic in today’s comedy

Is it hard to stay unapologetic in comedy today? Shashi thinks so but believes it’s necessary. “Being unapologetic doesn’t mean being reckless. It means standing by your truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. You can be both fearless and respectful,” she shares.

The viral mystery girl of IPL

Besides comedy, Shashi gained attention during the IPL 2022 as the “mystery girl” creating content for Punjab Kings. “It was a surprising but wonderful experience. It also showed me how quickly things can spread online and how little control we have over how people see us,” she says. Shashi chose to handle the fame with humor and gratitude, focusing the attention on the stories she really wants to tell.
