Prosecutors have requested a two-year prison sentence for an individual accused of persistently harassing South Korean actress Shin Se Kyung over a period of several years, her agency confirmed on Wednesday.
In an official statement, The Present Company, which represents Shin Se Kyung, revealed that the defendant had been indicted for ongoing cyber harassment involving repeated threats, defamatory remarks, and the dissemination of false information. The harassment reportedly extended beyond the actress herself to include her fans, family members, and close acquaintances, causing significant emotional distress.
“The prosecution has requested a two-year sentence for the defendant charged with continuously harassing Shin Se Kyung online,” the agency stated.
According to the agency, the harassment was carried out anonymously across various online platforms and included abusive and insulting language. Authorities arrested the suspect following a thorough investigation, and the individual is currently awaiting the court’s verdict in their first trial.
During a recent court hearing, the defendant’s legal counsel appealed for leniency, citing the accused’s isolated lifestyle and ongoing attempts to reintegrate into society by working part-time. The defendant has admitted to all charges.
Despite the plea, prosecutors emphasized the severity and repeated nature of the crimes and pressed for a two-year custodial sentence.
The Present Company has taken a firm stance on the matter. “We have secured substantial evidence of additional malicious posts and online abuse,” the agency said. “We will respond firmly and without leniency to any future incidents.”
They further emphasized the importance of accountability: “To prevent more innocent victims from suffering due to someone’s malicious behavior, the perpetrator must face the consequences in accordance with the law, no matter how long it takes.”
The case underscores growing concerns about online harassment in South Korea’s entertainment industry, where public figures often face anonymous and sustained cyberbullying.
