Today, June 11, is the birth anniversary of late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. His family marked the day with heartfelt tributes, a new app release, and a religious ceremony, while BBC’s documentary release stirred strong reactions.
Family Celebrates with Prayers and Cake
At Sidhu Moosewala’s home, a Sukhmani Sahib Paath was held to honor his memory. His father, Balkaur Singh, celebrated the day by cutting a birthday cake, remembering his son by his real name—Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu.
New App Launched with Unreleased Songs
In a special gesture to fans, the family launched an official app dedicated to Sidhu Moosewala. The app features three previously unreleased songs, which quickly garnered millions of views. Fans were thrilled to hear his voice again through this surprise musical gift.
BBC Documentary Sparks Controversy
On the same day, BBC World Service released a two-part documentary on Moosewala’s murder via YouTube. His father had filed a petition in Punjab’s Mansa Court to halt the release, with a hearing set for June 12. Despite his objections, the documentary premiered on June 11, leaving the family hurt and disappointed.
Inside the Documentary
The documentary features interviews with Moosewala’s old friends, journalists, and senior police officials. It also includes an audio conversation with gangster Goldy Brar, the man accused of plotting the singer’s murder. Moosewala was killed on May 29, 2022, near his village in Punjab’s Mansa district. He was shot more than 30 times in a brutal attack.
Shift from Theater to YouTube
Originally, the documentary was scheduled to premiere in a cinema hall in Mumbai. But after the family’s protest, the BBC shifted the release to its YouTube platform. The documentary covers Moosewala’s life, career, fame, controversies, and the tragic events surrounding his death.
