Legendary Singer Angie Stone Dies in Road Accident at Age 63

Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone, famous for her song “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and as a member of the hip-hop group The Sequence, tragically lost her life in a car accident early Saturday morning. She was 63 years old.

Her longtime manager, Walter Millsap III, said that Stone was returning to Atlanta from Alabama when the vehicle she was in flipped over and was then hit by a large truck. Sadly, she did not survive, while others in the van were taken to the hospital.

The Alabama Highway Patrol stated that the crash occurred at around 4:25 a.m. on Interstate 65, a few miles south of Montgomery. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van overturned and was then struck by a Freightliner truck driven by a 33-year-old Texas man. Stone was declared dead at the scene, and the authorities are investigating the accident.

Her children, Diamond and Michael Archer, expressed their heartbreak, saying they were in shock. Millsap also shared his grief, calling the loss devastating.

Stone was scheduled to perform at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men’s basketball championship halftime show that same day. In her memory, the event held a moment of silence, and CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker spoke about her impact, describing her as an inspiration.

Throughout her career, Stone released many hit songs, including “No More Rain (In This Cloud)”, which stayed at the top of the Billboard Adult R&B chart for 10 weeks, as well as “Baby” (featuring Betty Wright), “Brotha”, and her well-known track “Wish I Didn’t Miss You”. She was a leading voice in R&B, gaining popularity alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Maxwell, and D’Angelo in the early 2000s.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Stone started her music career in the church. She was part of The Sequence, one of the first all-female hip-hop groups, best known for their song “Funk You Up”, which has been sampled by various artists, including Dr. Dre. After her success with The Sequence in the 1980s, she later joined Vertical Hold before launching her solo career.

Her passing is a great loss to the music world, and she will always be remembered for her contributions to R&B and hip-hop.
