Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has taken a bold step that could shake the streaming industry. Instead of releasing his upcoming movie Sitare Zameen Par on an OTT platform after its theatrical run, Aamir plans to release it on YouTube—on a rental basis and much later than usual. His goal? To revive and protect the theater experience.
Why Aamir is Skipping OTT
In a recent interview, Aamir expressed concern over the growing trend of films being released on OTT platforms just 8 weeks after hitting theaters. According to him, this pattern is harming the theater business and reducing footfall in cinemas.
“Movies reaching OTT platforms too quickly is affecting theaters badly. From now on, I won’t release my films on OTT. Fans want to enjoy cinema on the big screen, and I want to support that experience,” Aamir said.
A New Path with YouTube
Sitare Zameen Par is scheduled for theatrical release on June 20. However, instead of following the traditional path of moving to OTT, Aamir will release the movie on YouTube for rent—but only after a considerable delay. He believes this model can generate income without hurting theater owners or reducing ticket sales.
Industry watchers were surprised by Aamir’s decision, with some speculating he might be “boycotting OTTs.” However, he clarified that it’s not about rejection but reform. He wants to ensure that theaters regain their importance in the movie-watching culture.
A Sequel with a New Twist
Sitare Zameen Par is said to be a spiritual sequel to Aamir’s critically acclaimed 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. While the original dealt with a child’s struggles with dyslexia, the new film shifts gears to become a sports comedy-drama, promising both heart and humor.
This bold move from a star of Aamir Khan’s stature could inspire others in the industry to rethink their OTT strategies too.
