Sonu Nigam Apologizes to Karnataka Amid Controversy Over Remarks at Bengaluru Concert

Singer Sonu Nigam has expressed regret to the people of Karnataka following his controversial comments about the Kannadiga community during a recent performance in Bengaluru. On Instagram, the veteran singer shared an apology, stating that his love for the state surpasses his ego. The incident occurred last month at a live concert in Bengaluru.

In his brief Instagram post, Sonu wrote, “Sorry, Karnataka. My love for you is bigger than my ego. Love you always.” This message came after a wave of criticism from some fans, but also support from others who appreciated his gesture. One fan commented, “Karnataka, you’ve wronged this person. His respect and love for Kannadigas are undeniable, yet he’s been apologizing and clarifying, while no one from Karnataka has spoken up against those responsible.”

Fans have shown mixed reactions to Sonu’s apology. Some supported his apology, while others questioned whether those who sparked the controversy would offer their own apologies. One comment read, “No need to apologize, Sir. What you did was necessary.” Another Instagram user praised his humility, saying, “Sonu ji, your humility is truly inspiring. Sending you endless positive vibes.”

Legal Action Against Sonu

Meanwhile, an FIR was filed against Sonu by the Avalahalli Police in Bengaluru Rural District, leading to a notice from the Bengaluru Police for the singer to appear for questioning within a week. The FIR accuses Sonu of making derogatory remarks about the Kannadiga community during his performance. Reports indicate that the remarks, captured on video, were made after some fans threatened him for refusing to perform in Kannada. Sonu also made a comparison to the Pahalgam attack during the event.

Sonu’s Explanation

Earlier, Sonu took to social media to clarify his stance on the incident, stating, “I am not a young man to tolerate humiliation from anyone. At 51, I’ve reached the second half of my life, and I have every right to take offense when someone as young as my son threatens me publicly over a language, particularly Kannada, which I use for my work. This occurred right after I performed my first song, and some fans continued to provoke me, even as others from the crowd tried to stop them.”

While the situation continues to unfold, Sonu Nigam’s apology has sparked a wider conversation about language, respect, and the role of public figures in sensitive matters.
