Maria Tato, the head of Spain’s World Cup 2030 organization, has stepped down after allegations of rigging the selection process for host stadiums. Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported that venue ratings were manipulated to favor Anoeta in San Sebastian over Balaidos in Vigo.

Altering the Stadium List

Vigo’s mayor, Abel Caballero, expressed outrage on social media, claiming that Balaidos was initially included among Spain’s 11 host stadiums on June 25, 2024, but was removed just two days later. He demanded transparency on who made the change and why.

Spain’s Hosting Plan

Spain is set to host 11 venues for the 2030 World Cup, including Barcelona’s revamped Camp Nou and Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu. Co-hosts Portugal will have three stadiums, while Morocco will host six.

Ongoing Turmoil in Spanish Football

This scandal adds to the recent troubles at the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Former president Luis Rubiales resigned in 2023 after his controversial kiss incident with Women’s World Cup star Jenni Hermoso. His replacement, Pedro Rocha, was later suspended, leading to Rafael Louzan taking over in December 2024.

The RFEF has yet to comment on the latest controversy.
