Sporting Lisbon clinched the Portuguese Primeira Liga title on Saturday after a 2-0 win over Guimaraes, securing their 21st league championship. The title race went down to the wire, with both Sporting and Benfica level on points going into the final matchday following a tense 1-1 draw in last weekend’s Lisbon derby.
Benfica needed to better Sporting’s result to lift the trophy, but they were held to a 1-1 draw against Braga. Even a win wouldn’t have been enough, as Sporting had the better head-to-head record.
Second-Half Goals Seal the Deal
After a goalless first half, Pedro Goncalves put Sporting ahead before Viktor Gyokeres – the league’s top scorer – added his 39th goal of the season to seal the win and cap off a sensational campaign.
Coaching Shake-Up Ends in Glory
Sporting Lisbon title win is even more impressive given the changes in the dugout. After last season’s triumph, Ruben Amorim left for Manchester United in November. His replacement, Joao Pereira, lasted only six weeks before Rui Borges took charge and turned things around.
Double Still on the Cards
Sporting now turn their attention to the Portuguese Cup final next Sunday, where they’ll face arch-rivals Benfica again, hoping to complete a domestic double.
