Student Protest Turns Violent at Tribhuvan University

A group of students, including recently elected Swaviyu (Free Student Union) presidents aligned with the ruling party’s student wing, vandalized the office of the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU) on Wednesday.

The incident happened when Acting VC Khadga KC was away at the TU Teaching Hospital. Taking advantage of his absence, around 15–20 students stormed his office and damaged furniture, including chairs, tables, and glass panels. Staff at the university confirmed the destruction.

The protest group was led by Bhupishwari Ain, president of Padmakanya Campus, and Rohit Kapali from Patan Campus. Other participants included members from Shankar Dev, Public Youth, and Saraswati campuses. After the incident, the students even posted a signed statement listing their demands.

The main issue was the delay in opening admissions for bachelor’s and master’s programs, which had been put on hold since February. Students claimed their rights were being ignored after the student union elections.

Tribhuvan University, however, clarified that the admissions were paused due to the academic calendar—not because of elections. VC KC stated that exams for already admitted students have begun and reopening admissions now would disrupt the schedule.
