Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri has decided to come out of international retirement to help his national team in the upcoming fixtures. The 40-year-old striker, who retired from international football in June 2024, will rejoin the squad for the FIFA international window in March.
Chhetri’s Return to Action
India will play a friendly match against the Maldives on March 19 before facing Bangladesh in the third round qualifiers for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. Chhetri’s return comes as a major boost for the team, as he remains India’s all-time leading goal-scorer.
Coach Marquez’s Special Request
India’s head coach, Manolo Márquez, personally requested Chhetri to return to the squad, recognizing the importance of the upcoming matches.
“The qualification for the Asian Cup is very crucial for us. Given the importance of the tournament and the matches ahead, I discussed with Sunil Chhetri about making a comeback to strengthen the National Team. He agreed, and so we have included him in the squad,” said Márquez.
Chhetri’s International Legacy
Chhetri retired from international football on June 6, 2024, after serving the national team for 19 years. His farewell match was against Kuwait in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. However, his influence on Indian football remains strong.
With 94 international goals, he is the fourth-highest goal-scorer in international football, standing behind only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Ali Daei.
Club Career and Current Form
Even after retiring from international football, Chhetri has continued to shine in club football. He plays for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League (ISL), where he has scored 12 goals and provided two assists in the 2024-25 season.
