Tamang Community Celebrates Sonam Losar with Joy and Traditions

Today is Magh Shukla Pratipada, and the Tamang community is celebrating Sonam Losar as their New Year with various programs.

From today, the Year of the Rabbit has ended, and the Year of the Garuda has begun. Every year, Sonam Losar is celebrated on the first day of the bright half of the month of Magh with different events. The festival follows a 12-year cycle, each named after an animal: Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog, and Pig.

During Losar, people bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new year based on the cycle of these 12 animals. This festival is celebrated with religious and cultural rituals. People perform earth worship, ancestral worship , give donations, visit elders, sing and dance, prepare delicious food, and exchange good wishes. It is a community event where people gather and celebrate together.

This festival is mainly observed in different parts of Nepal, especially in areas where the Tamang community resides. Along with Tamangs, other ethnic groups like Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nyeshangwa, Bhote, Dura, and Lepcha also celebrate it in their own traditional ways.

In Bagmati Province, where the Tamang population is high, Sonam Lhosar is celebrated with special enthusiasm. In Kathmandu, events are organized at Tundikhel, Boudha, and Swayambhu to mark the occasion. People from different regions of Nepal gather to celebrate this festival, following their unique traditions and customs.
