A peaceful demonstration turned violent in Kathmandu on Sunday as pro-monarchy protesters clashed with police in the Naxal and Baluwatar areas. The protest, led by various royalist groups demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy and Nepal as a Hindu nation, escalated after participants tried to breach restricted zones.
Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP Nepal) Chairman Kamal Thapa was arrested along with several others during the scuffle. Eyewitnesses said protesters attempted to attack police personnel, prompting authorities to respond with baton charges to control the situation.
Some protesters and security forces sustained injuries during the clash. Though the exact number of those detained hasn’t been confirmed, the police reported a significant number of arrests to prevent further unrest.
Due to the large crowd and rising tension, a heavy police presence was deployed, and local traffic was disrupted. RPP Nepal has condemned the arrest of its chairman and party members, calling for their immediate release. More updates on the incident are expected.
