Not all chickens look the same, and some are truly unique. Ayam Cemani, a rare breed of chicken, stands out because its feathers, skin, and even its meat are completely black.
This fascinating breed originated in Indonesia and was later introduced to Europe in 1998 by a Dutch breeding company. Due to its striking appearance and rarity, Ayam Cemani is highly valued. In 2013, one of these chickens was sold for $2,500 (around NPR 2.5 lakh) in Florida, USA.
Why is Ayam Cemani Completely Black?
Unlike regular chickens, which have red or white meat, Ayam Cemani’s meat, bones, and even bone marrow are black. However, its blood remains a deep red color. This unusual black pigmentation is due to a genetic condition called Fibromelanosis, which causes excessive melanin production in the body.
Apart from its exotic look, Ayam Cemani’s black meat is also believed to be rich in iron and is considered highly nutritious in some cultures.
