Ratan Thiyam, a great leader of Manipuri theatre and a world-famous theatre artist, died at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal at 1:30 AM on Wednesday. He was 77 years old and had been ill for a long time. His death is a big loss for Indian theatre. He was known for his creative plays that shared Manipuri culture with the world. His contribution to performing arts is unmatched.



A Visionary Artist Honoured with Many Awards
Thiyam was once the director of the National School of Drama (NSD). He founded the Chorus Repertory Theatre in 1976, blending traditional Meitei art with universal ideas and social messages in his plays. Over the years, he received many important awards including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1987), Padma Shri (1989), Kalidas Samman (1997), Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration (2008), and the highest honour, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (2012). The Government of Manipur also gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award for his service to theatre and culture.
Many leaders, artists, and theatre lovers have expressed their sadness over his death. Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said Thiyam’s work carried the soul of Manipur and inspired many. His legacy will continue to influence artists for years to come.
