“Thug Life Won’t Release in Karnataka, But I Won’t Apologise,” Says Kamal Haasan Amid Row

Veteran actor Kamal Haasan’s decision to halt the Karnataka release of Thug Life has not been enough to cool the storm surrounding his recent remarks. On June 3, 2025, the Karnataka High Court strongly criticized Haasan for his statement claiming that “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” asking pointedly, “Are you a historian?” The court remarked that such statements from influential public figures can deeply hurt cultural sentiments.

Stands Firm Despite Criticism

Kamal Haasan stood his ground during the hearing. Though he clarified that he harbored no ill intentions towards the Kannada community, he firmly refused to issue an apology. “I have no malice,” he told the court, maintaining his stance while expressing regret for any misunderstanding.

Open to Dialogue, Not an Apology

Kamal Haasan reiterated his willingness to discuss the issue with the Karnataka Film Chamber. While he ruled out an apology, he emphasized his openness to engage in respectful dialogue to resolve the matter constructively.

Karnataka Release on Hold, All Eyes on June 10

Originally scheduled for release on June 5, 2025, Thug Life will not hit theaters in Karnataka. The High Court has postponed the next hearing to June 10, where further decisions regarding the film’s future in the state could be made. Meanwhile, the film’s release in other regions will move forward as planned.
