Due to a low-pressure system developed in India and the partial effect of western and local winds, the weather is cloudy in Kathmandu Valley and nearby districts today.
This weather system has entered Nepal from Koshi Province and will likely cause light rain in the hilly areas from Koshi to Lumbini Province. The rain may help reduce the current air pollution.
Meteorologist Hari Prasad Dahal said there is a chance of rain in Kathmandu Valley and other hilly districts starting this afternoon (Tuesday). He mentioned that there is a higher chance of rainfall on Wednesday compared to today. “Rain is possible across hilly areas from east to west,” he said. “Today, there might be light and scattered rain, while tomorrow there could be light to moderate rain.”
According to him, this rain pattern may continue until Thursday. Eastern regions of Nepal are expected to receive more rain than the western parts.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, in its morning bulletin, said there is a chance of light rain with thunder and lightning in some hilly areas of the Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini Provinces. A few other places across the country may also get light rain.
In the higher hills and Himalayan regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces, there is also a chance of light snowfall.
There is a possibility of light rain in Kathmandu this afternoon. However, in areas west of Lumbini Province, rain is expected only in one or two places, said meteorologist Dahal.
Due to a long dry spell, many areas in Nepal are facing dryness, wildfire risks, and rising air pollution. Rain helps to clean the air by washing away dust and smoke particles, which can bring some relief from pollution, Dahal added.
