Two individuals have been arrested on charges of operating a vehicle with a Nepali number plate on a Scorpio with an Indian number plate used for smuggling.
The arrested individuals are 21-year-old Ishwari Bhandari, a resident of Pathari Shanishchare Municipality-8 in Morang, and 35-year-old Nitai Ghosh, who claims to be from Naksalwari Panchayat, India.
Both were apprehended on Monday night by an armed police team at the Kakarbhitta bus park area in Mechinagar Municipality-6, Jhapa.
They are accused of driving a Scorpio with a fake chassis and Nepali number plate. The two had brought the Indian Scorpio vehicle into Nepal, replacing its chassis and number plate with Nepali ones. The vehicle was seized by the security forces deployed from the proposed border security camp at Kakarbhitta under Battalion No. 2, Jhapa.
Following information about the illegal practice of bringing old vehicles from Nepal to Indian cities, replacing their chassis and number plates with Nepali ones, and bringing them back to Nepal, special surveillance was carried out in recent days.
The arrested individuals, along with the seized vehicle, which is valued at 2.5 million rupees, have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation and legal action.
